Saddle Up! The Horse in Sport & History of Clarke County
Long Branch Historic House & Farm, the Clarke County Historical Association and the National Sporting Library in Middleburg have collaborated to present a joint program titled Saddle Up! The Horse in Sport & History of Clarke County. The exhibition will be presented in Long Branch’s historic gallery space during May & June 2019 and traces the heyday of equestrian sport in Clarke County from the early to mid-20th century. Visitors will learn about landmark Clarke County equestrian events like the Berryville Horse Show and the Blue Ridge Hunt with primary source materials and interpretation from CCHA and NSLM. Part of “Horse Country” since the area was settled in the 18th century, Clarke County later reclaimed its equestrian heritage while rebuilding after the Civil War. Beloved community members like Archibald Bevan, Billy Greenhalgh, and Alexander Mackay-Smith subsequently raised the profile of equestrian sport and inspired the generations that came after them. In Long Branch’s other galleries, contemporary artist Isabelle Truchon will exhibit her new collection, ROAM, inspired by the wild mustangs of the Kiger region of Oregon. Roam will explore the history of the horse through time, with a focus on the modern wild herds that still roam in America today.

Tickets to the exhibit and art show are $5.00 per person & kids under 12 are free.
