Long Branch Historic House and Farm is a Virginia horse retirement facility that truly provides the ideal setting for horses lucky enough to be “put out to pasture” on our beautiful horse farm in the Shenandoah Valley. Located 20 miles west of Middleburg, VA, Long Branch’s horse retirement farm is the perfect location for your horse.
We specialize in the care of retired horses and your horse is the primary focus of our equine retirement business. Our staff understands that older horses require a different kind of care than those in work. To that end, we employ a staff of experienced horsemen, some of whom live on the grounds, making it a safe environment for your horse should an incident occur at any time of day or night.
All horses receive daily care, being checked over by at least two sets of experienced eyes each day. Our inclusive board bill of $225 a month includes hoof trims every 6-8 weeks, Spring and Fall vaccinations and a yearly dental float. Our fields are mostly parasite free and we conduct periodic fecal tests of our fields and worm our herds on an as needed basis. Our Virginia horse retirement farm has four board fencing, automatic waterers, large run-in sheds and hay during the winter months.
Here at Long Branch Historic House and Farm, our veterinarian administers vaccinations twice a year and provides equine care in case of emergency. We understand that retired horses should be kept “pasture sound,” and that the level of veterinary care should reflect that intention.
Long Branch utilizes a pasture management plan which provides horses with ample green grass for most of the year, making grain all but unnecessary for most of our horses. We do however have the option available for those horses that cannot keep weight on without that extra nutrition. The number of horses turned out together is determined by the number of acres in any given field. We monitor the turnouts to make certain that all horses are safe and get along comfortably with their pasture mates.
